How to Choose a Leather Camera Wrist Strap

A leather camera wrist strap is one of the most personal pieces of kit a photographer carries. It keeps your camera secure, sits against your skin all day, and — if you choose well — develops a beautiful patina that's uniquely yours.

But with different leathers, widths, attachment systems, and styles available, how do you pick the right one?

This guide walks you through everything to consider.

1. Neck Strap vs. Wrist Strap — Is a Wrist Strap Right for You?

Wrist straps suit photographers who prefer a compact, low-profile carry — particularly those shooting with mirrorless cameras, rangefinders, or smaller DSLRs.

They keep the camera close to hand and ready to shoot, without the bulk of a neck strap. If you're shooting events, street photography, or travel, a wrist strap is an excellent choice. For heavier telephoto setups, a neck or shoulder strap may offer better support.

2. Choose Your Leather

The leather is the heart of the strap. At 595strapco we work primarily with two hides:

  • Horween Chromexcel — a pull-up leather from Chicago's Horween tannery. Rich, supple, and characterful from day one. It develops a deep, mottled patina with use and is exceptionally durable. Ideal if you want a strap that looks better the more you use it.
  • Vegetable-tanned leather — a firmer, more structured hide that starts lighter and darkens dramatically over time. It takes on the shape of your wrist and develops a patina that's entirely personal to you.

Both leathers are premium choices — it comes down to whether you prefer a strap that's immediately soft and characterful (Chromexcel) or one that you break in and make your own over time (veg tan).

3. Width and Comfort

Wrist straps typically range from slim (around 15mm) to standard (20–25mm). A slimmer strap is more discreet and lightweight, while a wider strap distributes the weight of the camera more comfortably over longer shoots. Consider how long you'll be carrying your camera and how heavy your body is when making this choice.

Our Skinny QR Anchor Wrist Strap is a great option for a minimal, lightweight carry, while the MOCAL Premium Wrist Strap offers a broader, more padded feel for longer sessions.

4. Attachment System

How the strap connects to your camera matters more than most people realise. The main options are:

  • Split ring lug attachment — the traditional method, threading through the camera's strap lug. Simple, secure, and compatible with virtually every camera.
  • Quick-release (QR) — uses an anchor system (such as Peak Design anchors) that allows you to detach the strap in seconds. Ideal if you switch between a wrist strap and a neck strap regularly. Our QR wrist straps are compatible with Peak Design anchor links.

If you only ever use one strap, a split ring attachment is perfectly sufficient. If you like flexibility, our QR wrist strap is worth the small additional investment.

5. Colour and Finish

Leather wrist straps come in a range of natural tones — from pale natural tan through to rich dark browns and blacks. Consider what complements your camera body and your personal style.

Natural and mid-brown tones tend to develop the most visible patina over time, which many photographers find deeply satisfying.

Our range includes Natural, Antique Brown, and Olive Green options, among others.

6. Handmade vs. Mass-Produced

A handmade leather wrist strap is cut, stitched, and finished by hand — which means tighter quality control, better materials, and a product built to last years rather than months.

At 595strapco, every strap is made by hand in the UK using full-grain leathers and solid brass or stainless steel hardware. It's the kind of thing you buy once.
